Historical Narrative

Composed in 1975, Jude Benedictus (JP 103) reflects one of Betty Jackson King’s most personal dedications. The work honors Rev. Dr. William J. Faulkner, the founding pastor of Chicago’s Congregational Church of Park Manor, whose ministry deeply influenced both King’s spiritual and professional journey. Dr. Faulkner, formerly Dean of Chapel at Fisk University, brought to Chicago a vision of worship that united scholarship, social awareness, and the arts. Under his leadership (1953–1962), Park Manor became known for its strong preaching, storytelling tradition, and exceptional sacred music program.
That music ministry began under Catherine Jackson Adams, King’s sister and the church’s first Director of Music (1953–1958). Following her sister’s passing, Betty Jackson King succeeded her, serving from 1958 to 1965, enriching the church’s worship life with sacred anthems and original compositions. King’s collaboration with Dr. Faulkner went beyond the sanctuary—he later encouraged her move from Dillard University to Wildwood, New Jersey, where she found space for composition and reflection. Jude Benedictus thus stands as both a musical benediction and a tribute to the pastor who recognized and nurtured her gifts, linking her Chicago ministry to her later national acclaim.

Musical Description

Set for SATB choir with piano accompaniment (for rehearsal only), Jude Benedictus opens Solemnly in C major, drawing its text from Jude 1:24-25—“Now unto Him who is able to keep you from falling.” King’s choral writing balances reverence and lyricism, each voice entering with gentle independence before uniting in rich four-part harmony. The rhythmic pacing is steady and dignified, evoking the timeless beauty of a benediction traditionally sung at the close of worship.
Marked piano, the opening phrases move with quiet confidence, building gradually toward a fuller texture that mirrors the growing assurance of the text. Harmonically, King employs classical tonal clarity infused with subtle gospel warmth—characteristic of her sacred choral style. The piece’s structure allows choirs to emphasize blend, diction, and phrasing, making it ideal for closing services, academic convocations, or sacred concerts.
