Historical Narrative

Betty Jackson King’s arrangement of “I’m Going Down to the River of Jordan” is dedicated to Ernest Johnson and The United Male Chorus of New York, a respected ensemble known for its expressive performances of African American spirituals and art music during the mid-twentieth century. Under the leadership of Ernest Johnson, the group became recognized for its disciplined sound and devotion to preserving the rich choral heritage of the Black church. Johnson’s reputation as a director of integrity and passion aligned naturally with King’s own musical philosophy—rooted in the belief that spirituals should be performed with both reverence and technical excellence.

The United Male Chorus of New York was part of a larger network of men’s choruses flourishing across the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. Many of these ensembles, including Johnson’s, were affiliated with organizations such as the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc. (NANM), where directors and composers exchanged repertoire and support. These connections likely brought Johnson and King into professional contact, as King’s works were frequently performed by male choruses in both sacred and concert settings. The dedication of this arrangement reflects her admiration for the artistry and spirit of these singers, whose performances embodied the unity and perseverance celebrated in her music.

Musical Description

Arranged for T.T.B.B. voices with Baritone Solo and piano (for rehearsal only), “I’m Going Down to the River of Jordan” in the key of F major opens with a powerful solo over sustained choral responses, evoking the spirit of call-and-response worship. Marked Steady, the tempo and energy build through rhythmic repetition and accented phrasing in the chorus, leading to climactic exclamations of “Hallelujah!” King’s writing combines clear tonal harmonies with expressive motion, transforming this beloved spiritual into a vivid statement of faith and renewal suitable for both concert and sacred performance.
